![]() It's a nice tool but I see others for sale on ebay and such. Of course the string will be plumb even if you tie it to a rock. I suppose that being Starrette it is made to precision tolerances and so things like how well it is machined and balanced would be a factor, as opposed to some made in china one that might say have metal with hard spots or some inconsistency which could make the plumb bob sit out of plumb thus move the pointer from it's desired location exactly under the line. I saw a source confirming this but it was a very long time ago, when few knew that the Internet was brewing somewhere in the military labs.I guess self balance meaning that the plumb bob itself is plumb, not just the string. One could, it just wouldn't fit that much line on it's own spool. by the looks of the size of the spool it only holds a certain amount so I don't assume it is intended to be dropped like 100 feet or anything. This one has fishing line wrapped around it which has developed a twist. or for aligning sections of a machine or something like that? If I am going to do some rough job I would just use one of my old brass ones to keep the starrett one nice. I really can't think of a job where I would use the mercury filled one, I mean I don't think it has much place on a construction site but maybe in doing critical base layouts for a machine. Ok so it more accurate than any other run of the mill plumb bob, I mean they both hang straight down and yea ok it might be better as far as using the point accurately. It occurred to me that if one wanted they could adjust the weight by adding or removing mercury but why would I want to do that? and I wouldn't really care to open it anyway. ![]() Ok it is more accurate and I guess the mercury helps keep it small and stop the swinging action faster. With it I got a nice Starrett machinist level and Mitutoyo combination square that I will use a lot. I do a really varied job including some machining and machine repairs and of course I appreciate the accuracy and quality Starrett tools. I just picked up a Starrett Plumb bob that is mercury filled.
